Giving Parents Peace of Mind Through Estate Planning

Giving Parents Peace of Mind Through Estate Planning

Sending a son or daughter off to college, can be a stressful time for parents. With everything going on in the world today, you want to be sure your child is safe. Having access to medical information about your child if a health crisis arise would be a relief. And, being able to step in and manage your child’s affairs, if needed, would be an added bonus.

After your child turns 18, he or she is essentially an adult. You would need prior authorization from your now adult child to access medical information and handle their affairs. No parent wants to hear the words, “I am sorry. I am not authorized to provide you with that information. I am sure your child will contact you when he or she can.”

Having properly executed HIPAA authorization and Powers of Attorneys allows you access to medical information and the ability to step in and manage your child’s affairs until your son or daughter regains their health. It’s like adding your child to your car insurance. You don’t expect them to have an accident but if it happens, you are prepared!

This month at Heritage Hills Law, we are focused on educating graduates and their parents on the importance of executing HIPAA authorizations and Powers of Attorneys. Have a graduate or know graduate? We can help.
